The temple is steeped in puranic lore. During
Vaivasvatha Manvanthara there was severe drought and famine.
It almost led to the annihilation of the human race. The earth was parched and the rivers were dry.
Not able to withstand the agony of the people,
Sage
Jabali wanted to redeem mankind.
The sage had been in deep meditation near the
'Amalaka Theertha’, and was woken up as if by a divine will and witnessed the travails of the people. Jabali decided to perform a yajna to eradicate poverty. He sought the help of
Lord Indra, who asked him to take the celestial cow
'Kamadhenu’, the bestower of wishes. Since Kamadhenu was away in
Varunaloka, her daughter
Nandhini was ordered to accompany Jabali to the earth. Nandini, insolent and egoistic, refused to accompany Jabali to the earth as she termed it the land of sinners. Nandini refused to budge in spite of the repeated requests from the sage. The angry Jabali cursed Nandini to become a river. The enormity of the curse shocked Nandini who at once became repentant. But the sage could not take back the curse and she had to undergo it. Jabali being kind-hearted asked her to proceed to Kanakachala mountains and do penance there. Nandini followed the advice and after rigorous meditation, the Goddess appeared before her and advised her to flow as the river as the curse of the sage had to be fulfilled
and that is
NANDHINI river of
KATEEL.
